Print Button-Up Shirt: From Day to Night

Top: Gap via thredUP | Flowerc/o Hot Magnets | Shorts: Gap Outlet (refashioned from these!) – $26 | FlatsHush Puppies – $70 | Total = $96
I wore this last weekend when my parents were in town and Chase and I were able to go grocery shopping BY OURSELVES. It was amazing. No intricate car seat buckles, no trying to contain a handsy and wiggly baby in the shopping cart, is this what heaven is like? I think I can hear angels singing..
I just got this button-up from thredUP and I’m in love. They’re TEA CUPS! I didn’t realize I was so whimsical.

Close up of my….crotch? :/ Just focus on the tea cups…
Top: Gap via thredUP | Flowerc/o Hot Magnets | Jeans: thrifted Target (and skinnied) – $8 (similar) | Shoes: Target – gift (similar) | Total = $8

We also had a birthday dinner that night for my brother-in-law and I wanted to dress up and to cut down on standing in front of my closet for an hour trying on 298374 different outfits again, I just changed out the bottoms and shoes. Afterwards, my parents watched Grey while some of us went to my BIL’s friends’ band play for their 10th(!!!!!) anniversary. It was so loud and late and I felt so old, butbutbut….we did young people stuff!!!11

This past weekend my parents came to visit. Those who know me and/or follow me on Twitter know that it is the MOST stressful thing for me. It’s been better since we’ve had Grey so their attention is placed elsewhere…i.e., away from me and onto Grey who soaks up all the attention like a ShamWow.
The best part of their stay was a half an hour before I was supposed to go pick them up when Grey had the BIGGEST blow out of the century…like all over his car seat, his legs, and his arms and hands. I think I puked in my mouth a little…or a lot. I had also reserved that half an hour to do a last minute cleaning for my neurotic and germophobe mother. Instead, I spent TWO hours bathing Grey and cleaning, dissassembling, washing, drying, and REassembling the car seat. I thought I was going to die of a stress attack that day…and I would’ve welcomed it. I did not sign up for this…!!!!!
Anyone have any good news today? Just writing this out again is making me anxious and giving me hot flashes..

(And, yes, I totally copied the fabulous Sydney’s outfit.)

P.S.. If you missed it, there’s a giveaway going on right now for a colorful short-sleeve maxi dress HERE!

I miss 30 Rock.. 🙁 Moving on… with a tear.
Blazer: Modest Mob – $30 | Necklacec/o Max & Chloe | Tank: J.Crew c/o thredUP (similar) | Jeans: Gap via thredUP (similar) | Sneakers: Forever 21 – $10 (similar) | Total = $40

I wore this casual get-up a couple weekends ago when we had a sleepover at my in-laws’ house. We go there a few times each month and sometimes stay the night because it’s our second home…and they have a pool…and stocked fridge and pantry…and cable. It’s like, why did we leave again?? (To backtrack, we lived with them for a few months earlier this year while I was recovering from a C-section and so we’d have more time finding an apartment for our new family of tres.)

I realized right after I put this outfit on that I wore the same tank top and light blazer as I did here:

It just goes together, you know? And by “goes“, I mean that blazer is the lightest covering I have for this kind of weather. Come on…..FALL!
So I guess you can consider the outfit below as a casual after-church version??

K, moving on to the newest addition to my closet….these straight leg jeans. My very first pair. I’m calling them The New Boyfriend Jeans. They’re just as comfy but with a more fitted leg, so it doesn’t look like you’re actually wearing your boyfriend’s jeans. And they’re kind of my favorite right now and forever.

Hey! My thredUP code is still active! 35% off and free shipping for new customers when you use CM35.

Oh, and here are some pics of my baby in a hat because I couldn’t get enough of him on my Insta. <3

And some more. Story:  My father-in-law thrifted this tiny armchair and bought it for Grey!! It’s the perfect size for him to lounge and watch his Saturday morning cartoons once a month and demand his milk. Please tell me I’m not the only one who sees a future teenage Grey.. Someone stop time!!!! :(:( I’m not ready.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! Try not to die in this heat. For me.

What to wear in hot weather as a sister missionary

I got an email from a soon-to-be Mormon sister missionary who is going to Texas – read: hot and humid, and even more so when you have to dress modestly and be outside most of the time. I wrote a post about how to dress for that kind of weather a couple of years ago…and I still stand behind everything I said! To reiterate…
  • Keep your hair away from your face and neck.
  • Shower (at least) 5 times a day. (IT’S A JOKE! Kind of.)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen are muy importante.
  • Wear breathable fabric like cotton. NO polyester or synthetic fabrics that may stick to your skin when you sweat.
  • Avoid layers, especially those layering tees!! Simple is best! Think basic essentials:  top, bottoms, shoes, and jewelry. You’ll be so hot you won’t care about looking good. So make sure your BASICS look good!
  • Breathable shoes…but, please… NO flip-flops.
  • Try to avoid dark colors because all that stuff you learned in science class in elementary school is f’real.

The Mormon church recently updated their missionary guidelines for dress and personal grooming that you can see here. I loved that they gave you examples, but it seems to be only for cool weather. I mean, why are they all wearing jackets?!? They’d roast here in Sacramento. (We’ve been seeing high 90s here the past couple of weeks. So I pretty much hate life.) I’d advise sister missionaries in hot climates to NOT wear jackets if you don’t want to be hospitalized. Just thinking about it is giving me hot flashes.. Instead of wearing a jacket/blazer, focus on clothing with details that will make it more professional for you.

When it’s too hot to think about looking presentable, the easiest solution would be a DRESS. You can get creative with your accessories and hair to change it up each time. Here are some missionary-worthy dress outfits (well, to me, at least.. I may be wrong.. I’ve never served a mission. I was a child-bride.)
For the outfit details going L to R.. 123456

And here are some modest dresses I found for you. All under $25!! OH YEAH

I mentioned this in my old post, and I’ll say it again… FULL SKIRTS! ..like the ones that fall away from your body. No clinging of any kind here because once you add sweat into the mix…it ain’t pretty.

What am I wearing? L-R: 12345678

And a few of my picks.. again all under $25!!

I also picked out some COTTON and RAYON TOPS that I thought were cute for a sister missionary:
OKAY, where are all my RM sisters at?!? Can you weigh in with your words of wisdom? (hehe)

T-shirt: Forever 21 – $4 | Belt: thrifted – $2 | Skirt: via thredUP – $1 | ShoesHush Puppies – $70 | Total = $77
I wore this a couple weekends ago when Chase and I were running errands and shopping. Now that this guy has a job with a business dress code, we’re starting to realize a work wardrobe solely based on H&M isn’t going to last very long. So we went to Nordstrom during their anniversary sale and bumped into an internet friend of mine, Kali!! She used to have a fashion blog and is a photographer in Stockton. We’ve been talking about getting together so it was so funny to see her out of the blue. She’s the sweetest and it was so great to finally meet her in person. Even Grey couldn’t get enough of her! 🙂

P.S. ThredUP gave me a coupon code to share with new customers. Enter CM35 at check-out to get 35% off and free shipping!! Or use this link to get $10 off your first purchase (no free shipping). Unfortunately, you can’t use both deals! The code expires at the end of the month so getitgetit.

For Breastfeeding Week

Necklace: Anthropologie – gift card (similar) | Shirt: Gap – gift card (similar) | Skirt: thrifted – $3 | Heels: Vince Camuto – $76 (similar) | Total = $79
Wore this to church a couple weeks ago but I’ve worn this outfit plllenty of times before that. Loose untucked shirt for easy access to the boob? CHECK. Loose skirt because summer sucks? CHECK. It’s like once I became a mom, I’ve given up on anything form-fitting and that has zippers, which is like half of my closet. Pre-baby Elaine didn’t know what was up. I should’ve warned her.

It was World Breastfeeding Week last week and I’d like to share an experience that confirms the importance of breastfeeding awareness..

I breastfed Grey (WITH A COVER) during church the same day I wore this outfit and got the ultimate stare-down from a high-up-there church leader. Even though I want to believe he was staring because he was proud of me for doing something so simple yet controversial in the house of the Lord, I’m pretty sure his stares were those of disapproval.

In most of the Mormon church buildings, there’s a private room called the “Mother’s Lounge,” which is basically a closet with two gross chairs and maybe a counter for diaper-changing… and I hate it. I feel disconnected and isolated to have to go in a separate room to do something as simple as FEED my BABY.

#micdrop

Personal Style Rules by Rebecca

Top: Zara (similar) | Pants: Dr. Jays (similar) | Wedges: Target | Tank: Anthropologie

This one broke a lot of personal rules for me. The first being to avoid black always and forever. And the second being to avoid animal print forever and always. Not because I have anything against them. It’s just one of those things that looks great on other people. No, I don’t feel liberated or empowered. I’ll still probably avoid black and animal print, but I have a number one rule that trumps all other rules. And that is, if you find a pair of fun pants for less than $15, you buy them. Period. The end. Over and out.

Christmas in July by Melissa

Skirt: J.Crew (similar) | Shirt: J.Crew (similar) | Sandals: DVF (similar) | Necklace: Ann Taylor | Sunnies: graduation gift (similar)
I really like my tartan-patterned skirt. It has pockets and elastic around the waist. Could you get more perfect? Comfort, practicality – I might actually convince my husband this is an essential item :). I love it so much, I have totally disregarded the fact that it’s screaming Christmas. Paired it with a little summer wear and viola! It’s totally summer, right? Besides, doesn’t everyone say they want Christmas in July?

Wearing this for one hour warrants an outfit post

Jacket: Modest Mob – $30 (similar) | Necklace: thrifted – $3 (similar) | Tank top: J.Crew c/o thredUP (similar) | Skirt: Forever 21 – $6 (similar) | Heels: Vince Camuto – $70 | Total = $109
I wore this to church this past Sunday for an hour because Grey was being the most well-behaved child and we wanted to go home early and cherish it forever. (Yeah……. NOPE.)

This tank is another item I received from thredUP. It’s super soft and it has BUTTONS, which cometofindout are the BEST for nursing. I gave all of my button-ups away because the ladies were too big, and I didn’t want to take anyone’s eyes out. You’re welcome, world.

So that same day, we had dinner with Meredith and her fam. I’m embarrassed it took like 3 months to meet her!! Her kiddos are so cute, especially that Everly. I knew Grey was big for his age but compared to Ev, he’s a monster baby…my monster baby, I mean. <3 And I’m pretty sure Chase and Bronson are BFFs now.

How Midi can you go

Necklace: giveaway win (similar) | Shirt: thrifted Target – $3 | Skirt: vintage c/o thredUP (similar) | Heels: thrifted Nine West – $3 (similar) | Total = $6
This midi skirt is my third item from thredUP! (If you didn’t know, you can get $10 off your first purchase through this link.) My first perfect-midi-length skirt. I have a floral one that hit at a weird part on my calves that made my already big calves look very…attractive. So I hemmed it. THIS, however, doesn’t require any alterations because it’s PERFECT and makes my ankles look so sexy. You can’t deny.
Has anyone else had trouble finding the perfect midi skirt? Or is it just me and my big legs? (and sexy ankles.)

One gray dress, Two ways

This gray sweater dress is my second item from thredUP! I mean, what is better than a sweater dress in 100° weather! Because I’m a genius. I can’t wait til the temps get cooler so I can wear it with leggings and boots.. For now, I’ll sweat my way through each wear because I love it so much…which is why I wore it twice in a row! Here’s how I styled a gray sweater dress for summer weather..

Dress: Michael Kors c/o thredUP (similar) | Flowerc/o Hot Magnets | Belt: thrifted – $1 (similar) | Sandals: Walmart – $10 (similar) | Total = $11
During the high temps, I like to keep my outfits super simple and fuss-free. Like instead of jewelry, I opted for a skinny belt with a magnetic flower, which may not have been a good idea when you’re carrying a 23-pound weight on your hip and he keeps plucking at it. Babies… amirite?
Dress: Michael Kors c/o thredUP (similar) | Bootsc/o Wanted Shoes
This is my run-out-the-door-just-hurry-up-and-wear-something outfit. Bun, dress, boots – can’t get simpler and quicker than that!
Also, any new pose requests? My pose shuffle is stuck.

Helping the earth kind of

Top: Sherry Taylor c/o thredUP (similar) | Necklace: JCPenney – gift card via giveaway win (similar) | Shorts: thrifted Forever 21 – $5 (similar) | Shoes: Target – gift (similar) | Total = $5
I received a box of clothes from thredUP last week and can’t wait to show you guys! They have trendy, practically new clothes for a fraction of the retail price. Plus, you can sell your clothes and get credit back. Being the cheapskate I am, I love me some secondhand clothes. I like to feel I’m helping the earth…one clothing at a time.
And maybe I convinced Chase that we needed to go to the mall so I could wear my “new” shirt because it’s a million degrees outside, and then he ended up trying on and buying clothes (not me for once) so win-win!
Big cheeses to make my boy smile!! // Shirt shopping is rough for a tall, handsome drink of water.
The fam and I are headed up north to the Redwoods to escape the heat for 4th of July!! I’m so excited. I’ve never seen the big trees and it’ll be nice to be away from the city and my laptop for a little. Although I can’t cut myself off entirely from technology… I’m bringing my tablet and phone. WHAT.
Stay cool, ‘Murica. I’ll be back..

Graduation Dress Tips by Melissa

Dress: Anthropologie | Sandals: DVF (similar) | Sunnies: gift (similar)

In May I finally donned a cap and gown and officially graduated! Yay! For all those graduating, here is my personal advice on how to dress under that cap and gown:

  1. Where something light. A cap and gown are heavy and hot, especially if your graduation ceremony is outside.
  2. Pockets are necessary. Never underestimate the power of pockets. You can’t carry a purse up on stage, but you need a phone to find your family afterward. Solution: Have a pocket available. Also, from past experience, it isn’t a bad idea to have a light snack hiding in one of your pockets. I like fishy crackers.
  3. Flat shoes. I wore heels at my last graduation and my feet HURT by the end of the day. This time around I was all over my flat sandals – made my life so much easier.
  4. Jewelry. I personally forgo almost all jewelry on graduation day. I love replacing it with the leis – candy or flower.
  5. Finally, hair. I personally wear it down so I can run my fingers through it when I take off my cap. But, always have bobby pins in one of those pockets – your cap can always use a little extra hold.

Congrats to all of you who graduated/are graduating this year!

Hats & Hair by Melissa

Hat: Marshalls (similar) | Top: J.Crew | Skirt: Madewell (similar) | ShoesTarget
I am very excited that I finally found a hair cut that will work with hats! Seriously, my hair is thick and curly (AKA frizzy). Short hair just poofed out under hats, and I have such a long face I needed something to give the illusion of less face – welcome bangs! It has taken all my woman-power to not cut my hair off…so far I am happy I haven’t. Let’s see if this lasts through the summer.. Anyone else find their perfect hair cut?

Can you guess whose tablet this really is??

Staples sent me the Samsung Galaxy Note 8″ tablet. And you bet I was allllllll over that. Chase bought a tablet a couple years ago but ended up selling it last year. I never used it much – just to read the Hunger Games like five times. But lately I’ve been seeing how babies have been interacting with technology these days like it’s another appendage. That could be a good or bad thing, but mamas.. let’s face it… It’s usually a good thing to get more than a minute to yourself, amirite? So I kindasorta regretted getting rid of ours too soon..
And then this happened.

He tooooootally loves it…especially the piano app. I mean, he is my son after all. He can play that for a whole five minutes until he clicks on an ad and almost buys a car.
But I’d say this is probably my favorite.. The pre-naptime movie. Netflix FTW! Soooo much better than hearing him crying it out for an hour. Although, he will cry to let me know the tablet fell over. And I’m like HELLO YOU HAVE HANDS.

Baby + electronics = messy and messier electronics. So I was so glad when Staples also sent me a Nordstrom gift card to spend on a tablet case! I was going to get a HOT! PINK! one, but I did my boys a favor and settled for this grey and hot! pink! Marc Jacobs one instead. SeewhatIdidthere? 🙂
Someone’s chubby little digits.. Mine. They’re my chubby little digits.

Outfit details here!
Thank you Staples!!

My sister sometimes buys clothes from those online Asian stores where shipping is like $50 for one item. And then they suck you in by making you add 10 more things to your cart to lower shipping to a penny. You know what I’m talking about, right? Well, sometimes those clothes are hit-or-miss. And sometimes your sister gives you the misses. And you like them. Like this sleeveless button-up shirt. I like the added stripes and the chiffon back because summer and back sweat. (TMI?)

Not liking the harem-pant-look I’m getting from these pants.. If I hike it up any higher, Baby will protest and angrily kick all day so I had to low-ride them. Already, Baby = 1, Elaine = 0…..

I’ve been really into layering t-shirts since most of my shirts are too short. I liked seeing the looseness of the t-shirt under the shorter “fitted” shirt…though I don’t have any more “fitted” shirts…so…there’s that..

Anyway, I wore this a couple weekends ago when Chase and I met up with a reader/fellow baby mama and her adorable family. She offered to donate some clothes and toys to us!!! It was so nice to meet up with her and chat about all things baby-related, especially since she and her husband are more experienced than us! More importantly, they had a MASSAGE CHAIR. I could’ve sat there forever…

Sneaker Outfits Inspiration

Gonna be walking a lot tomorrow (today) and needed some sneaker outfit inspiration. I also need sneakers.

UPDATE:  I ended up wearing the outfit below after finding these images online. I also wore this jacket but didn’t take a pic with it. I was pretty happy with how this turned out considering I hate athletic sneakers as regular attire. This may have changed my mind…but only if I can buy new kicks.

You thought I was going to put Monday, right? I TOTALLY GOTCHU.

This was taken on Sunday if you didn’t get it yet. But it was good – thanks for asking. We had stake conference this past weekend and my visiting teaching companion and I visited with three sisters on our list! ..one of whom is Kari!! I think her contributions to my blog count as VT…

Also, I did a crownbraid again but I did it further away from my hairline and the nape of my neck and I think I look less like a man this way.

I’m wearing a Forever 21 gold flower necklace ($8), Anthropologie gold bib necklace (free with gift cards), H&M white shirt ($10), Tulle teal skirt (c/o Tulle), and JCPenney berry heels (free with gift cards) with an MNG by Mango black bag (free with gift cards).

What the rain..

There is no point in having a nice lens when you can’t use it. Looks like I have to revert to the basic lens for the tripod pics. Why does everything bad happen to me?

I love these jeans. They are a size 0. I am not a size 0. So these babies make me feel sooooo good. They are also getting a little big from wear. I’m just going to pretend I’m getting skinnier despite the 8 pounds…and that I really am a size 00. (Yeah, right.. My butt would never let me.)

I think I’m going to lengthen these jeans a tad by redoing the hems. I like the “I can’t see your shoes” look. Mostly because I always wear my clog sandals with these jeans and I don’t like looking at my toes…because feet are gross.
